🔹Dr. L.Subramaniam was born on July 23, 1947 at Chennai, Tamil Nadu. His father, Prof. V. Lakshminarayana was an iconic figure among musicians of his time and his mother, V. Seethalakshmi was a well known classical singer.
🔹In his young age, he learned violin from his father. Infact, his parents were his first Gurus. As a child prodigy, he performed his first music concert in a major music festival at the age of six.
🔹In order to fufill his parents desire, he studied MBBS in prestigious Madras Medical College during late 1960s. After his medical graduation, he completed his Master’s in Western classical music from the California Institute of the Arts, USA and mastered the art of orchestral composition. Later, he received a PhD for his thesis on Raga Harmony from Jain University, Bangalore.
🔹During 1970s, Dr.Subramaniam with his brothers L. Shankar and L. Vaidynathan formed a Trio Music troupe, that toured throughout India. At the age of 25, he was honoured with the title ‘Violin Chakravarthy’ (Emperor of the Violin) from the Governor of Madras in 1972 for his depth, technique, and style in Carnatic violin playing.
🔹His passion towards Violin continued, he revolutionized the role of the violin in Carnatic music, elevating it from a supporting instrument to a prominent solo instrument by his innovative experimentations.
🔹His curiosity and unquenchable thirst in music explores various new techniques and compositions. He created the Global fusion concept, ingeniously fused South-Indian Carnatic music with world famous artists from various musical backgrounds, including jazz, Western classical and world music.
🔹Infact, his compositions including the Global Symphony, the Concerts of Two Violins and the Fantasy on Vedic Chants showcased his innovative approach and earned him international recognition.
🔹Most of his days, he composed for orchestras and ballets and performed more than thousands of Live performance around the world by blending Indian and Western instrumentation.
🔹His marvelous performance took him to the film industry and composed for the films like “Salaam Bombay!” and “Mississippi Masala” which brought the Indian sounds to international cinema.
🔹Moreover, he released a four-CD set, called “An Anthology of South Indian Music” and also wrote an authoritative book named “Classical Music of India,” and “Euphony” to appreciate the concepts of South Indian Classical Music.
🔹In memory of his late father, he founded “Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival.” This is the biggest global music festival in India, held, every year, primarily in India and across the world and unites global musicians under a single stage.
🔹As well as, he mentors young musicians worldwide through his music school Subramaniam Academy of Performing Arts (SAPA) at Bangalore.
🔹Throughout his career, Dr. Subramaniam had received more than hundred awards and accolades including:

🔅Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1990
🔅Best Composer Award by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation in 1996
🔅Special Medal of Honour from King Birendra of Nepal in 1997
🔅Lotus Festival Award at Los Angeles in 1998
🔅Padma Bhushan in 2001
🔅Lifetime Achievement Award, Limca Book of Records in 2012
🔅Sangeetha Kalanidhi title from the Madras Music Academy in 2024.
🔹Dr. Subramaniam’s family is a testament to his musical legacy. His late wife, Viji Subramaniam, was a vocalist and collaborator on many projects. He later married Kavita Krishnamurthy, a celebrated Bollywood playback singer, with whom he shares a deep artistic connection. His children, all talented musicians in their own right, have carved out their own niches in the music industry.
🔹Dr. Subramaniam, a Global Violin Icon, has dedicated his entire life to music and continues to inspire generation of musicians.
